Join the Team

When your team sets out to reach a goal, a winning attitude on the part of every member is essential to success. Attitude is defined as your state of mind toward a person or situation. People with negative attitudes stand to lose respect and cooperation. A bad attitude can hold you back, both at work and in life. Peers with negative attitudes share a number of equally undesirable attributes.

Negative Teammates Are:

· Easily discouraged;

· Frequently late or absent;

· Unable to solve problems or take risks;

· Unwilling to seek new challenges and bored with work.

People with so many bad habits can sabotage even the best efforts of all their teammates. Positive teammates can also be easily recognized, but for different reasons than negative peers.

Positive Team Players Are:

· Willing to give their all and go that extra mile;

· Enthusiastic and cooperative;

· Optimistic about the challenges each day presents;

· Efficient and on time.

Supervisors and peers analyze your attitude by observing you at work. How you look, sound and behave are sure giveaways of how you feel about the team.

How you feel about your job will have a direct effect on how well you perform and how your teammates feel about working with you. Further, there’s a huge personal stake involved.

“You’ll find that the way you approach your work can affect your productivity, chances for promotion, safety and wellbeing, and life off the job,” the authors say.

If you detect flaws in your attitude, take corrective measures immediately before you do damage to your team’s and your personal reputation.

To Be a Positive Part of Your Team:

· Be realistic about the requirements and demands of your job. Devise ways to work more effectively.

· Set and pursue ambitious personal goals. Within the context of team play, determine how you can best contribute.

· Learn more about your company and its products or services. You’ll see how you fit into the “big picture.”

· Trust yourself and have confidence in how your ideas can contribute to the team.

Recognizing poor attitudes in teammates and yourself, and taking steps to improve on them, can have a positive effect on your team. Take control of your attitude and set yourself on a course for team success.
